Reddit is where the engines read about you

When someone asks a model 'what do people actually use', it often quotes a thread. Here is how to find the threads for your questions and what to do about

Ask a model "what CRM do small agencies actually use" and watch the answer. It will often say "many users on Reddit recommend", and then name two or three products with the reasons people gave. The model is quoting threads. It has learned that a dozen strangers agreeing is a better signal than a vendor page, and for "what do people really use" questions it leans on that signal hard.

This is good news if you are in those threads and bad news if you are not. Either way, you should know which threads.

Find the threads for your questions

Take your losing questions and search them on Reddit with a couple of words swapped for the way people talk: "recommend", "switched from", "anyone using", "worth it". Look at the threads with the most replies from the last year. Read them properly. Note:

  • which products people recommend, and the exact reasons they give;
  • which complaints keep coming up about the leaders;
  • whether anyone has mentioned you, and what they said.

That list is closer to the truth about your market than any analyst report, and the models are reading the same list.

What not to do

Do not post "we built X, check it out". Do not have your team upvote each other. Do not create accounts to praise yourself. Communities detect all of it, the mods remove it, and a thread of people calling you a spammer is quoted by the models too.

What works

Answer the question honestly, and name yourself last. If someone asks for a tool that does A and B, and you do A and B, say so, disclose you built it, and say who it is not for. Founders who do this get upvoted for the disclosure.

Fix the complaints. If the leader's complaint is "the export is broken", and yours is not, that is a page and a reply.

Write the page the thread wants. Threads asking "X versus Y" are a brief for an honest comparison page on your site. Write it, then the next time the thread comes up, someone links it. Sometimes that someone is you.

Be there before you need to be. Accounts with a history of useful answers get trusted. Start answering questions in your field where you have no product to sell.

Keeping it up without living on Reddit

Nobody has time to read Reddit every day. The useful cadence is weekly: collect the new threads for your questions, extract what is being recommended and why, and turn that into two things, a content idea and a reply you might write. ZwayRank's Reddit collection runs on that weekly cycle where it is switched on for a workspace, and it drafts the reply for you to post; it never posts on your behalf, because a founder's own words are the point.

The bigger lesson

Reddit is one source. Review sites, comparison articles and documentation are the others. What they have in common is that the engines trust them more than they trust you. The work is to be in them, honestly, and to write the pages they point at.
